동양적 조화 그 고요한 잠언-신명희 작가는 제한된 평면 위에 무방위성을 가지고 일정한 단위를 만들어가는 작품의 작위적作爲的인 한계 성과 제한된 화면이 가지는 긴장감과 팽창력을 중요시한다. 그 제한은 팽창을 위한 제한으로, 거친 바람이 부는 가운데 한결같은 모양으로 뻗어가는 느린 걸음걸이의 끈질김이 차곡차곡 채워져 있다. 그 안에서 30여 년간 외길을 걸어 온 작가의 숨은 내공이 발견된다. 즉 제한된 화면에서 거대한 우주의 저 밖 보이지 않는 세계로까지 의미를 확장시키는 자유로운 작업이 연작聯作으로 구체화 되어 표현된 것이다. 정지된 상태가 아닌 움직임으로 현재와 미래를 잇는 시간과 공간과의 조화로운 팽창인 것이다. 이러한 시각적 제한에서 자유로운 공간으로의 팽창은 창의적 발상의 전환이며 관념적 이미지나 형성을 거꾸로 바라보려는 작가의 무한한 가능성이다. 이러한 다양한 변주變奏를 이끌어나가는 것은 발자국이다. 이것은 다양한 뉘앙스를 담고 있다. 생생한 움직임은 음악적인 리듬과 조화로 감지된다. 빠르게 달려가는 숨가쁨, 길의 구비를 넘을 때 마다 느껴지는 희열, 뉘앙스가 다른 길과 부딪히며 생기는 갈등에 직면한 당혹스러움, 이를 화해시키면서 전체적인 통일로 향할 때 느끼는 장악의 기쁨이 고스란히 화폭에 담겨있다. 습관적인 무심함을 버리고 한 박자 쉬는 여유를 가지고 작품에 다가가면 그동안 무심코 지나쳤던 사랑을 발견한다. 작가의 심상과 일치되는 시·공간의 자유로움을 느낀다. 단순함 속에서 삶의 깊은 진리와 대면한다. 멀리서 걸어오는 진정한 나를 보게 되는 것이다. Critical Essay by Shin Myeonghee Eastern Harmony, a Quiet Aphorism The artist places great importance on both the deliberate compositional limitations of her work—built through units on a confined plane—and the tension and expansive energy that such restricted surfaces hold. These limitations are not meant to constrain but rather to serve as a springboard for expansion. Like steady footsteps braving a fierce wind, a tenacious perseverance accumulates in each piece. Within this approach lies the artist’s quietly cultivated strength, developed over more than 30 years of unwavering dedication. This expansion from a limited canvas to the vast, unseen universe is expressed through a series of interconnected works. It is not a static state, but rather a movement—a harmonious extension between time and space, connecting the present with the future. The artist’s work embodies a conceptual inversion, seeking creative freedom within visual limitations. It reveals her boundless potential to reinterpret ideas and images in reverse, expanding them beyond conventional boundaries. At the center of these variations is the footprint. It carries a range of emotional nuances—vivid movements sensed through musical rhythm and harmony: the breathlessness of rushing forward, the joy of overcoming a bend in the path, the confusion from conflicting directions, and the eventual joy of bringing all elements into harmony. These sensations are all vividly present on the canvas. If we discard our habitual indifference and approach the artwork with a moment’s pause, we may discover a love we’ve overlooked. We experience a sense of freedom in time and space that aligns with the artist’s own inner imagery. Within simplicity, we come face to face with profound truths of life. We begin to see our truest selves approaching from afar.
